Casa MID 60 is the transformation of a century-old structure located in the historic center of Mérida. The original building consists of a traditional colonial-era volume characterized by ceilings over five meters high, masonry walls finished with lime-based plasters and pigments, and original patterned cement tile floors preserved in remarkable condition.
The site includes a generous rear garden with mature vegetation, where a large tamarind tree becomes a defining element of the project. Responding to these existing conditions, the design establishes a linear sequence that connects old and new, creating a spatial journey through the property.
At the heart of the intervention is an elevated swimming pool inspired by the water reservoirs once found in Yucatán’s henequen haciendas. Positioned along the main axis of the project, it reinforces the relationship between memory and contemporary living.
Materially, the intervention sought continuity between past and present. A custom polished cement finish was developed on site to match the tones of the existing structure and respond to the region’s humid climate. Within the original building, layers of paint were carefully removed to reveal the historic lime finishes, doors were restored, and the patterned cement tile floors were recovered through a meticulous process of polishing and waxing.
Casa MID 60 is an architecture of preservation and adaptation, where new interventions are integrated with precision and respect, creating a contemporary retreat deeply rooted in the history and character of its place.
